Our Tea Journey

The history of tea in Sri Lanka begins with serendipity and the determination of one man. In the mid-19th century, Sri Lanka’s economy was dominated by coffee, with plantations spread across its highlands. However, a devastating coffee blight destroyed vast estates, plunging the island into an agricultural crisis. Amid this uncertainty, tea emerged as a new hope.

In 1867, Scottish planter James Taylor arrived in Ceylon. Eager to explore new agricultural possibilities, Taylor began experimenting with tea cultivation on abandoned land in the central highlands. Despite the unknowns, Taylor persisted, nurturing the tea plants and refining cultivation techniques. He also developed processing methods that would lay the foundation for the modern Sri Lankan tea industry.

In , Taylor sent a modest 10-kilogram shipment of Ceylon Tea to London, marking the beginning of a global industry. Over time, Sri Lanka’s diverse geography proved ideal for producing a variety of teas, each with a distinctive flavor profile. By the early 20th century, Ceylon Tea had gained international recognition for its superior quality.

Taylor’s pioneering methods inspired other planters, leading to the establishment of numerous estates and factories across the island. What began as an experiment grew into a thriving industry, with Ceylon Tea becoming a global commodity. By the end of the 19th century, Sri Lanka had firmly established itself as a key player in the global tea trade.

Today, James Taylor’s legacy lives on in every cup of Ceylon Tea. Sri Lanka is renowned for its premium tea, offering a wide range of flavors, from bold and robust to delicate and refined. The tea industry has not only bolstered the island’s economy but also shaped its cultural identity. Tea-drinking rituals are embedded in daily life, making Ceylon Tea more than just a beverage—it is a symbol of the perseverance and vision of James Taylor.

Sri Lanka’s tea industry continues to evolve, adopting modern techniques and sustainable practices to maintain their leadership in the global context. The legacy of James Taylor’s vision endures through James Taylor Tea Ceylon (Pvt) Ltd, which continues to produce the finest Ceylon teas, blending tradition and innovation to showcase the best of Sri Lanka’s tea heritage.
